Reflexive Verbs - Los verbos reflexivos

Objective:  Students will conjugate reflexive verbs in order to speak, read,
write, listen and respond appropriately in the target language

To say that people do something to or for themselves, you use reflexive verbs.
A reflexive verb has two parts:  a reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nos) and a verb form.
Here are all of the present tense forms of levantarse:
me levanto  (I get up.)         nos levantamos  (We get up)
te levantas (You get up.)
se levanta (S/he gets up.)    se levantan  (They/you all get up.)

Many reflexive verbs in Spanish describe daily routine actions:
acostarse (ue) - to get oneself up
afeitarse - to shave oneself
arreglarse - to fix oneself   e.g.  Me arreglo el pelo.  (I fix my hair.)
banarse - to bathe oneself
cepillarse - to brush  e.g.  Me cepillo los dientes. (I brush my teeth.)
Te cepillas el pelo.  (You brush your hair.)
despertarse (ie) - to wake up (oneself)
ducharse - to shower
lavarse - to wash oneself
pintarse - to paint oneself         e.g.  Me pinto la cara.  (I paint my face.)
ponerse - to put on oneself       e.g.  Nos ponemos los zapatos.
                                                         (We put our shoes on.)
secarse - to dry oneself             e.g.  Se seca el pelo.   (S/he dries his/her hair.)
vestirse (i) - to get dressed (oneself)     Me visto.  (I get dressed.)

PLEASE NOTE:

Reflexive pronouns usually come before the verb, but they may also be
attached to an infinitive.

Me lavo la cara.  (I wash my face.)  Voy a lavarme la cara. (I'm going to wash my face.)

With reflexive verbs, you usually use the definite article with parts of the
body or articles of clothing.

Me pongo la chaqueta.  (I put on the jacket.)
Me cepillo los dientes.  (I brush my teeth.)

Verbs like "gustar" - Los verbos como "gustar"

Objective:  Students will read, view a video, complete online written practice
activities in order to cooperatively create advertisements and a
jingle for a TV commercial for foods/refreshments endorsed by
                     famous Spanish-speaking celebrities

There are several verbs that always use the indirect object pronouns: me, te, le, nos, les

encantar            to love (something)                  importar          to matter

gustar                to like                                       interesar          to be interested in

These verbs all use the same construction:  indirect object pronoun + verb + subject
Me gusta el futbol.  (I like soccer.)    ?Te interesan las pinturas? (Are you (all) interested
                                                             in the pictures?)

PLEASE NOTE:
These verbs have only two forms:  singular and plural
What determines whether the singular or the plural form will be used is the thing that is
being talked about.  In the first example above futbol is being talked about and it is singular.
Therefore the verb form  gusta is used.  In the second example above pinturas is being
talked about and it is plural.  Therefore the verb form interesan is used.

More examples:
Te encanta el libro.   (You love the book.)                     Te encantan los libros. (You
                                                                                         love the books.)
A Maria le importa la nota.                                             A Maria le importan las notas.
(The grade matters to Maria.)                                           (The grades matter to Maria.)

COOPERATIVE ACTIVITY

Group students into 4's and/or 5's.  Have each group divide.  Each smaller group
completes one of the following:
Small group # 1
Write and draw an advertisement for a food/refreshment that is endorsed
by a famous Spanish-speaking celebrity.  Use either "gustar, encantar, importar"
or "interesar" in the singular.

Small group # 2
Write and draw an advertisement for a food/refreshment that is endorsed
by a famous Spanish-speaking celebrity.  Use either "gustar, encantar, importar"
or "interesar" in the plural.

Both small groups then reunite to form the original group of 4 or 5 and use
the information from both small group activities to create a jingle for a TV
commercial for the foods/refreshments used in both small group activities.
The celebrities' names must be mentioned,  one of the verbs in the singular,
and one of the verbs in the plural.  Students must be prepared to perform
their jingles for the class!
NOTE:  I have found that the groups have more success with their jingle
performances when they have an actual tune.  Some students even
use a beat via "rapping" or beating on a table or desk as a substitute
for a drum.  You might want to include a rubric.

             a jingle = una sintonia

Prior to beginning the activity have students share examples of well-known
jingles that are on TV.  e.g.  -Burger King, "Have it your way".
                                              McDonald's, "I'm lovin' it".
                                              Target, "Expect more. Pay less".
American Express, "Don't leave home without it:.
                                               Empire, "800-588-2300 Empire".
                                               Loreal, "Becuase you're worth it".
                                               Macys, "The magic of Macys".
Geico, "15 minutes could save you 15% or more".
This entire lesson can be completed within a 90 minute class period or
two 45 minute class periods.

!Diviertate!  Have fun!
